Anonymous: Random advice seeker here! How do I tell my paranoid and judgmental mother that I really really need to see a therapist again asap after two years of being or seeming fine/stable? I don't want her to freak out and send me to a mental hospital (she's seriously like that) and I don't want my dad to be angry at me (he was when I was seeking help in the past and said i only had a weak personality). I'm getting the instense familiar feelings and they're getting worse, so I feel i need to do something

I get the feeling that you’re underage, and I’m so sorry your parents are like that. Sometimes they just don’t understand, or don’t want to make the effort to understand. Although it’s unfair, a lot of the time there isn’t much that can be done about it. Mental illness does not mean you have a weak personality. It’s chemical. Don’t believe that stigma, at all. The fact that you are able to recognize when you need to seek help actually implies incredible strength. Many people don’t ever get to that point due to pride, and I think that you’re brave.

The first option is to sit them down and as calmly as you can explain that you’re starting to feel those things returning, and that you’d like to speak with someone before it gets too bad. Explain that it’s more of a preventative measure rather than an urgent emergency, and hopefully they won’t freak out on you. Hopefully they will give you the tools you need.

If they’re entirely noncooperative, or if you really fear that they’ll react unfavorably, try looking up free counseling in your area ( or if you’re in school, you can try talking to the counselors or school psychologist there as well if one is available to you. You could also try calling your local hospital and ask what kind of mental health services they offer. Also, smetimes graduate students at universities offer free or cheap counseling as a part of their degree training.
